As you enter Mistiso's Place Vacation Rentals by way of the winding pathway, passing by an age old Virginia creeper wrapping the front veranda you can't help but notice the warm homelike feeling enveloping the place. Owned and operated by Balfour residents Maria and Peter Schuh, Mistiso's Place is a charming "Arts and Crafts" vintage home that has been transformed into an eclectic vacation rental that perfectly melds with the creative culture of Nelson BC. Old meets new: modern new conveniences are embedded in history with reclaimed plank floors, antique furnishings, French doors and eyebrow windows. Maria, an artist in her own right, has added her personal touch by hanging some of her original multimedia paintings throughout.
Located at 811 Vernon St., the 1926 building was the original Emory family home. Maria and Peter purchased it in early 2000, and refurbished it from Emory's B&B into a charming multi-use building that houses Peter's dental office in addition to the four self-contained vacation suites. The transformation was a family affair with contribution from not only Maria and Peter but their two school aged sons as well. The boys helped paint, distress some of the newer wood trim to blend with the old, and smashed tiles for the mosaic tiling on the top floor. Maria took care of the unique paint features found throughout the building, and the funky tilework. Peter showed amazing creativity in applying functional design toward the structural layout of the suites, as well as doing much of the finishing woodwork.
Family owned and operated for over ten years, Mistiso’s consistently offers guests a tried and true basic of really, really good service. Maria deeply believes in attention to every detail as well as cleanliness beyond measure. The suites are always spotless and comfortable and every need is anticipated. The simplest touches are reflective of Maria’s caring nature. Along with her wonderful staff, she can guarantee each guest a memorable stay.
As a result of their hard work, Mistiso's Place was awarded the "Heritage building of the year" in 2001, and for the last 3 consecutive years, the "TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence". This accolade is only given to businesses that, without fail, receive exceptional reviews from travellers.

They keep coming back, time after time, to revel in the beauty of the West Kootenays, the humble eclectic vibe of Nelson and to feel like one of Maria’s family, welcomed with her bright smile and open arms.
